September Meeting

Another summer is in the home stretch… and we are lucky to be continuing with good weather!

The blooms in our gardens are still plentiful.
Our competition plants, for several of us, are NOW showing off… oh dear! just a little late for ribbons!

Here are some photos from our meeting.

Show and Tell : Larry M. brought his Strawberry begonia which he explained is not really a begonia, but a saxifrage. The “strawberry” name comes from the little runners it sends out. Larry was excited that it came back from the dead this winter!  Larry also showed a Coleus, vigorously growing in “semi hydroponics”, a new term for many of us.   “Pon” is the current fad for growing cuttings.  The medium consists of zeolite, pumice rock, and lava rock which is ¼ inch or smaller.

Elaine brought a gorgeous South Burnaby Garden Club winning begonia (sorry, missed getting a photo) and told us about the many winning plants and vegetable garden entries she and her mom, Elsie, won this year.  Did I need to add “as always”? (They are amazing gardeners!)

The winner of our Display Table was a lovely scented (unnamed) pelargonium by Melanie G.  We had lots of blooms for judge, Lorna H., to choose from.  Winners were: Fuchsia Sunshine by Elsie L., Begonia White Pink Picotee by Melanie G., and Pelargonium Antique Salmon by Nora B.

A special thank you to Lorraine… her  goodies were SO good, that they were gone in minutes of serving tea! Yum!

Of course there were the usual Club activities,
but if you missed this meeting you ALSO missed the Streptocarpus WORKSHOP by Garth McFadden!
More about that in the next blog!

Do you enjoy puzzles?
Here’s a fun (free!) puzzle link to explore.
I made the puzzle from one of our meeting photos! Try it out!
